FRED AND ALBERT PIT STORIES

An extract from an 8 hr long filmed conversation between two brothers from a family in which all the men worked in the pits.
Fred and Albert started when they were fourteen years old and spent the whole of their working lives on the coal face in conditions that did not change until they were nearing the end of working down the pit.
The conversation between these last two of five mining brothers was made in the later part of their lives. It is the first time they had sat together and discussed all they could remember about their early lives and a life underground.
This work is an attempt by the artist and photographer peter lavery to recreate the vision he had when his father Fred used to regale him with pit stories both before and after he retired.
